The Faber Academy is a programme of dynamic creative writing courses run by leading indpendent publisher Faber and Faber. This October, we shall be running two six month courses in Dublin - Writing a Novel with James Ryan and Eilís Ní Dhuibhne and Becoming a Poet with Paul Perry. We are currently receiving applications for the courses, and the deadline is 30 August. We are delighted to run courses in the heart of Dublin and to be able to invite some great Irish literary names along to run workshops.

A New Way To Fly Novel Workshop 2010-2011
Dublin

Organised by The Stinging Fly in association with the Irish Writers' Centre. Sean O'Reilly will lead a second novel-writing workshop this year, starting in October. We're accepting applications for it now. The workshop runs over a period of twenty weeks (starting early October) with weekly sessions where participants present and discuss their own work. In addition there will be five day-long sessions with visiting writers. Eight to ten participants will be selected on the basis of work submitted (before August 20th) and they will be expected to work towards the completion of the first draft of a novel. Novelist and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown/IADT Writer-in-Residence Mia Gallagher will be running a series of weekly Creative Writing Workshops at IADT. The workshops will run for ten weeks, starting Thursday 20th January, from 6.30 – 8.30 pm. The workshops will include exercises and techniques to spark creativity and strengthen story-telling and writing skills; participants will also use a tried-and-tested critiquing model to hone their critical skills and sensitively respond to others’ work.

Travel Writing with Charlie Connelly

This two-day course would give those attending a firm grounding in what makes good travel writing. Combining tutorial, discussion and a couple of short writing assignments, attendees will leave the course with a better understanding of the mechanics of travel writing and where and how to place articles and books.

Finish Your Novel with Colin Kostick

This is a practical course for writers who are already part-way through the writing of a book. The goal of the course is that by the end of it, those attending will have gained sufficient impetus, clarity and enthusiasm for writing that they will go on to complete their books. It takes place on Tuesday evenings.

Feature Writing with Henry McDonald

On this ten-week course Henry McDonald, author and Ireland Correspondent of The Guardian, will cover feature writing techniques for magazines, internet and newspapers, and how these genres differ from the who, what, where, when and how of conventional straight news reporting. Hands-on research and practical writing exercises will form the basis of this dynamic course.

Beginners' Creative Writing with Jean O'Brien

If you want to know how to put your story down in a structured way, how and where to get started and how to complete your tale then this six-week course is for you.

Intensive Week-Long Poetry Workshop with Leanne O'Sullivan

This is a week-long intensive course with daily lessons being given by poet Leanne O' Sullivan. Each afternoon, a guest speaker will speak to the class, providing practical advice based on their own experiences as published poets. Our guest speakers include Paula Meehan, Pat Boran, Gerry Smith and Joeseph Woods. More speakers will be announced shortly.This workshop is for those who would like to begin to write poetry or those who would like to develop poems they have already started.

Writing Non-Fiction: Memoir & The Personal Essay with Molly McCloskey

On this two-day non-fiction course, we will look at a few examples of published non-fiction – memoir, personal essay, travel, reportage, or pieces that combine elements of these forms. These short texts will be provided by email in the week before the workshop and students will be expected to have read them prior to the first day of the workshop.

Getting to the Heart of Your Characters: Intensive Week Long Course with Mia Gallagher

Creating characters that resonate with readers is at the heart of all good fiction and drama. In this intensive 5-day course, novelist, performer and playwright Mia Gallagher will introduce participants to skills and techniques for developing and understanding characters. The course will employ writing exercises, theatre games and a high level of feedback and dialogue. The morning sessions will be tutored by Mia, with a different guest speaker each afternoon. Guest speakers will be Michelle Read, Billy Roche, Denis Kehoe and Deirdre Kinahan.

New Way to Fly Workshop

This series of workshops is aimed at writers who are in the early stages of writing a novel and who feel they will benefit from a relationship with a group of others engaged in the same process. The Making of a Novel, Are you ambitious to develop your writing talent? Do you need help from writing professionals? Do you need individual feedback on your work? Do you wish to maximise your chances to be published? This course is designed as an inspirational, rigorous and practical guide to writing a novel and getting published. The course consists of 26 two-hour evening sessions and will include theoretical sessions, practical sessions (writing exercises, with three or four students reading their work at each session), interactive sessions with internationally published authors of literary and genre fiction, meetings with editors, publishers and literary agents. All tutors and speakers are experts with extensive experience and good communication skills. Among the contributors, internationally acclaimed writers Ken Bruen (crime fiction), Siobhán Parkinson (the first Irish laureate for children’s literature), Marita Conlon-McKenna (children’s & women’s fiction), Celine Kiernan (fantasy), Catherine Dunne (women’s fiction)… (more to be confirmed) The course will start on October 14th, 2010 and end on April 28, 2011. At the end of the course students will have an opportunity to submit one work of fiction for assessment to the course directors and receive individual feedback no later than in September 2011, with a possibility ofrepresentation of their work by Author Rights Agency Ltd. However, this does not guarantee representation and/or publication of their work by Author Rights Agency or any other agents/publishers. There will be two groups (Wednesday night sessions and Thursday night sessions)and there are only 15 places available in each group. The Stinging Fly is now accepting applications for the fourth year of its innovative novel-writing workshop.

Led by novelist and short story writer, Sean O'Reilly, 'New Way To Fly' is the perfect solution for those who are in the early stages of writing a novel and who feel they will benefit from a relationship with a group of others engaged in the same process.

 

Under Sean's expert direction, the group will meet once a week in a workshop setting over a six-month period. The ultimate aim is for each participant to complete a strong first draft of his/her novel.

 

Alongside the workshops, there will be a series of specialist talks by guest speakers on several Saturdays over the period. Previous guest speakers have included Chris Binchy, Evelyn Conlon, Mia Gallagher, Michael Harding, Dermot Healy, Christine Dwyer Hickey, Declan Hughes, Emer Martin, Paul Murray, Nuala Ní Chonchúir, Mark O’Halloran, Kevin Power, Ed O’Loughlin and Peter Sheridan.

 

Participants will be selected on the basis of work submitted. We will take applications up to August 3rd 2012, though early entry is encouraged as places on the workshop will be offered on a rolling basis.
