Dickens in Dublin
JANUARY 2012
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the world’s greatest novelist, Laurence Foster has re-created Charles Dickens’ first public performance in Ireland
CHARLES DICKENS was born on February 7th in 1812 in Portsmouth. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to London. At 19, having had little formal education, Charles became a reporter and recorded the parliamentary speeches of Daniel O’Connell, the Irish Liberator. They retained a lifelong mutual admiration. In August, 1858 Dickens paid the first of three lengthy visits to Dublin and was hailed with delight everywhere he went. He often found it difficult to make his way from Morrison’s Hotel (on the corner of Dawson St. and Nassau St.) and through the crowds who were queuing to see his performance. Dickens in Dublin is a recreation of that dramatic evening in Ireland’s capital city.

Restored tomb of Oscar Wilde to be unveiled today
NOVEMBER 2011
The restored tomb of Oscar Wilde will be unveiled later today at the famous Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. The date was chosen to coincide with the 111th anniversary of Wilde's death. The project was coordinated by his grandson Merlin Holland, and supported by both the French and Irish governments. When Oscar Wilde died on this date in 1900, he was a penniless exile. Friends of the writer could only afford a sixth-class grave outside Paris. Wilde was later reinterred in Père-Lachaise, the final resting place of writers, artists and composers. His new tomb was unveiled in 1914 - an angel in flight, by sculptor Jacob Epstein. It became a magnet for tourists and admirers, who by the mid 1980s had covered the monument with lipstick kisses. French conservationists have carefully cleaned the Art Deco tomb and encased it in glass. For more information on the project, visit http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/1130/oscarwilde.html

130th Anniversary of the birth of James Joyce
FEBRUARY 2012
Today, Thursday, 2nd February, is the 130th anniversary of the birth of James Joyce!
Arguably Ireland’s greatest literary genius and a leading proponent of modernism in fiction, James Joyce was born at 41 Brighton Square to John Stanislaus Joyce and Mary Jane Murray, and spent his earliest years there and in Castlewood Avenue. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and at Belvedere College before going on to University College Dublin (on St Stephen’s Green), where he studied modern languages.
Joyce left Ireland with Nora Barnacle in 1904, and was to spend the rest of his life in Italy and France, paying his last visit to Ireland in 1912. Joyce died in Zurich on the 13th January, 1941, and is buried in Zurich's Fluntern Cemetery.
Joyce's collection of short stories, Dubliners, and the choice for Dublin: One City, One Book 2012, was first published in 1914 by Grant Richards Ltd., London.

Congratulations to Dublin writer, John Curran who won both Macavity and Anthony Awards
SEPTEMBER 2011
Dublin writer John Curran has won the Macavity Award for Best Mystery-Related Nonfiction and the Anthony award for Best Critical/Non-Fiction for his book Agatha Christie's Secret Notebooks.
John Curran’s painstaking detective work in deciphering Agatha Christie’s 73 notebooks, which span the early 1900s to the 1970s, bore fruit when he was commissioned by HarperCollins and the Agatha Christie Archive Trust to write a book about Christie’s notes and how they shine new light on her creative process. Published in the UK in 2009 and the US in 2010, the book is now regarded as a seminal work by Christie aficionados. Its commercial and critical success has led to the publication of a second book by Curran, Agatha Christie’s Murder in the Making, which was published by HarperCollins on 1 September this year in time for the Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay.
In May this year, John Curran won the non-fiction Agatha, another major independent crime-writing award. However, the announcement that John has also won both the Anthony and the Macavity makes it a hat-trick of three of the world’s most famous crime-writing awards.

Or that George Bernard Shaw wrote more plays than Shakespeare? These and many more golden nuggets of literary anecdote can be mined from a special exhibition launching next Monday 22nd August, 7.30pm in the Nicholas of Myra Parish Centre, Francis Street/Carmans Hall in the heart of the Liberties. FEBRUARY 2011
Dublin UNESCO City of Literature Writers' Forum
The UNESCO City of Literature Office is hosting a Writers’ Forum in order to engage with you, hear your opinions and to inform the strategic direction for the promotion and development of our “City of Literature”.
Dublin’s designation as one of only four UNESCO Cities of Literature in the world is an honour for the city and its writers. As a permanent designation, it offers huge opportunities for writers in Ireland, at all stages of their careers, writing in every language. Equally, the designation provides significant potential for bookshops, publishers, publications, libraries, universities and others to further engage with writers, readers and visitors. The designation is a recognition of the energy, vitality and influence that Irish writing and writers have brought, and continue to bring, to the world.
The Forum will take the format of informal engagement through a World Café style event, to capture your views on a range of issues. Your input into this conversation will assist us in ensuring that we maximise the opportunities presented by our City of Literature designation.
We will be hosting two identical sessions, one on each of the two dates listed below. Please express your interest in attendance at one session only:

Joseph O'Connor's Ghost Light
OCTOBER 2010
JOSEPH O’CONNOR’S GHOST LIGHT
IS DUBLIN’S ONE CITY ONE BOOK CHOICE FOR 2011
Dublin City Council is delighted to announce that the ONE CITY ONE BOOK choice for 2011 is GHOST LIGHT by Joseph O'Connor.
DUBLIN: ONE CITY ONE BOOK is an annual promotion, taking place in April each year, to encourage everyone in Dublin to read the same book. The chosen title is supported by a wide range of public events and celebrations, and by attractive banner-style advertising throughout the city. Previous One City One Book novels have been Flann O’Briens’s At-Swim-Two-Birds, Sebastian Barry’s A Long, Long Way, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
For Ghost Light, the celebrations in April 2011 will include:
- A month of public events, readings and music, at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.
- Performances and readings of plays by John Synge and his circle.
- Exhibitions, extravaganzas, happenings, walks, talks, train rides, art shows, films etc.
- A series of unique events titled ‘SYNGE FOR YOUR SUPPER’, in which any Dublin resident can invite Joseph O'Connor to come and give a reading in her/his home, workplace, back yard, school, college, flat, apartment, local pub - any venue imaginable. Eight lucky readers will be selected. Whether reading to two people in a bedsit or to 100 people on the morning bus-ride, this is an exciting new way for people to take ownership of Dublin: One City One Book.
O'Connor's novel, which was published by Harvill Secker in June, is loosely based on the love affair between the great Irish playwright John Millington Synge and the Abbey Theatre actress Molly Allgood.
The novel received rave reviews at home and internationally, and was a number one bestseller in Ireland for nine weeks. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham called it: ‘A rare and wonderful book’. It has been sold for translation in 16 languages.
A special paperback edition will be published under the Vintage imprint for Dublin: One City One Book.
Commenting on the news, Joseph O'Connor said: ‘I am delighted and deeply touched for Ghost Light to be chosen to receive this accolade.
Any Dublin writer would be thrilled to have a novel honoured in this way. I look forward to getting involved in making next year’s One City One Book Festival the best and most inclusive yet.’
